I am having fun with flowers this week. Though it’s snowing outside my window I can still bring some springtime into my studio. I decided on creating an acrylic painting with colourful stylized tulips. After doodling a bit I drew a small pencil sketch of how I saw it in my minds eye. I wanted it to have movement as though the flowers were dancing in the breeze.
I chose to break up the composition with circles drawn freehand for a more organic feel. This also gave me the fun of changing the colours and textures where the lines intersected as you can see in the photos of my steps below. I love how the painting really comes to life once I have outlined everything (photo 4) with a hot reddish pink paint line, the images were now really popping. A lot of this painting’s elements had a vertical thrust so adding additional horizontal bars across some leaves and in the background really helped to balance it out.
I was loving the graphic quality of ‘Kiss My Tulips’ and enjoyed adding more line work and sweeps of colour as I went along. Adding the white strokes against the black lines on each tulip flower really brought them forward against the cool green of the leaves, see the finished painting at top of page. I am really happy with this completed painting, it’s a bit of flower garden that can be enjoyed inside all year round.
